Insurance tip: Risk of fire during the Christmas season
Candles are part of a contemplative Christmas season. But with them the risk of fire also increases. It is often underestimated. Likewise, there may be problems with insurance.
With the beginning of Advent, it’s not just the candles that light up in German households. According to the General Association of the Insurance Industry, the number of fires is also increasing. “Candles should never burn unattended and should be extinguished as soon as you leave the room,” recommends claims expert Margareta Bösl from uniVersa Insurance. Especially with Advent wreaths and arrangements, the candles should be securely attached and care should be taken to ensure that they do not burn down too far. The closer the flame gets to the dry branches, the higher the risk of fire. If there is a house fire, this is a case for household contents and residential building insurance. The damage should be reported to the insurance company as soon as possible. According to the Insurance Contract Act, the insurer is generally entitled to reduce the damage proportionately if gross negligence was involved. “This can happen, for example, if a candle has been left burning unattended or you have forgotten to turn off the stove,” says Bösl. Consumer-friendly offers now waive the objection of gross negligence in their insurance conditions. “This is definitely recommended because it means that claims can be settled smoothly and legal disputes can be avoided,” adds the claims expert at uniVersa.
