People in need of care are increasingly dependent on social assistance
In nursing homes in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, more and more residents depend on social assistance. If in 2020 13,830 residents were assisted in Saxony, in 2021 they were already 14,990, with an increase of 1060. The number of welfare beneficiaries also increased in Thuringia (from 230 to 8315) and Saxony-Anhalt (from 380 to 8910) in retirement homes. This is the result of data from the Federal Statistical Office in response to a request from the left faction to the Bundestag.

The background to this is that costs in homes are steadily rising and so are personal contributions for nursing home residents and their relatives. According to the leftist faction, for example, one in four people in Saxony-Anhalt is a social case. “The nursing home is increasingly becoming a poverty trap,” said Leipzig Bundestag member Sören Pellmann of the “Leipziger Volkszeitung”, who first reported the data. “It’s a scandal how the federal government is treating our older generation.”
