Insurance sometimes has to pay for show-off behavior

Simply driving around the roundabout seemed too boring to the supposed driving artist and not nearly impressive enough for his passenger. Instead, he tried to drive around the roundabout in his Chevrolet Corvette in a so-called drift, in which the vehicle’s wheels deliberately spin. On the second lap, however, the traffic hooligan lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a wall, causing considerable material damage to the speedy car. According to ARAG experts, he wanted this reimbursed by his fully comprehensive insurance. But the insurer initially refused and pointed out that both intentional damage and car racing are excluded from insurance cover. The judges who were called upon, however, pointed out that intentional intent in the failed drift attempt could be ruled out with absolute certainty, because the aim of the wannabe rally driver was to impress his passenger with the car drift. Which, all in all, was definitely successful. And for a race, there was no second vehicle in the situation against which the race could have taken place (Regional Court of Coburg, Ref. No.: 24 O 366/23).
