IndependerAlmost everyone assumes that the insurance premium of a ‘heavier’ car is a lot higher than the insurance of a lighter model. But what about electric cars, which are often heavier than combustion engine vehicles? Independer.be makes the comparison.
The heavier the car, the higher the insurance premium. If you drive a heavier car, you will always pay a higher premium than if you opt for a lighter vehicle. The reason is simple: if a heavier car is involved in an accident, it will cause more damage than a lighter model anyway. That is precisely why insuring a diesel car is usually more expensive than a regular petrol car. A diesel is heavier, so there is a greater chance of greater damage in a collision.
Have your electric car towed? These are the – serious – consequences for your insurance.
What other factors play a role in calculating your premium?
There are several factors that determine the amount of your car insurance premium. The most important are your age, your place of residence, the value of your car and your bonus-malus degree. In addition, the number of kilometers you cover per year also plays a role, the so-called kilometer scales.
Do you have a car, but don’t use it that often? In that case, a mileage insurance can be a cheaper solution.
And what about electric models?
Electric and hybrid cars are heavier than diesel models anyway. So you would assume that the insurance premium is also higher. But our comparison proves the opposite.
TESTED: the premium differences between electric, hybrid and diesel
On Independer.be, we compared the price of full comprehensive insurance for a BMW X3 in all its versions at various insurers: iX3, X3 hybrid (with petrol) and X3 diesel. All parameters (place of residence, age) are the same, only the fuel type is different. The differences are significant…
• Cheapest premium iX3: 830 euros per year
• Cheapest premium X3 hybrid: 1,025 euros per year
• Cheapest premium X3 diesel: 1,025 euros per year
Conclusion
The comparison makes for big differences. Electric driving provides the cheapest insurance premium. Hybrid and diesel are almost 25 percent more expensive.
Why? Electric cars are much more environmentally friendly because they do not emit any CO2 when driving. That is why insurers also want to make the purchase of cars without CO2 emissions attractive. They do this by offering so-called ‘eco-discounts’, which amount to up to 30 percent on the BA insurance and sometimes also on the comprehensive formulas, as our comparison shows.
Savings tip: If you drive electric or hybrid, compare carefully the premium prices on Independer.be before signing a contract. Some insurers give a larger discount on electric driving than others.
