E bikes are very popular. The fast Peledelcs are also expensive, they cost between 2,000 and 8,000 euros. That is why the question arises as to which types of insurance are suitable for e-bikes and bicycles.
Basically, insurers differentiate between normal e-bikes and S pedelecs. All electric bikes that have more than 250 watts of power and are faster than 25 km / h are considered small motorcycles and must be insured like a motor vehicle.
The second distinction regarding suitable insurance is the value of your bike. If it is a normal bike that is worth less than 500 euros, we do not recommend any extra insurance. It is sufficient if the bike is included in the household contents insurance. If the bike is more expensive or if it is an e-bike or a cargo bike, then it makes sense to take out fully comprehensive bike insurance.

Insurance for bicycles under a new price or value of 500 euros.
Your bike is in the Household insurance Insured against theft if you have a bicycle clause in your household contents insurance contract. The insurance reimburses the value of your bike as new if the bike is stolen. If the bike was stolen at work or on the way, the insurance does not cover the normal basic tariff. However, the additional “bike” tariff can be taken out and then the bike is also protected against theft outside the living area. If there are several bicycles in the household, the home contents insurance will also cover if several bicycles are stolen.
The bike must have been locked with a safety lock, otherwise the insurance will not pay. Here the burden of proof lies with the bicycle owner. Therefore it is best to take a photo of the bike with the lock as a precaution. Number combination locks are not recognized. U-locks or chain locks, however, do. The theft must also be reported to the police. Details on claims processing can be found below in Top 4.

Insurance for e-bikes, bicycles over a value of 500 euros or cargo bikes
The e bike has a maximum wattage of 250 watts and a top speed of 25 km / h. Everything above that means that you have an S Pedelec and this is covered by vehicle insurance. More on this in Top 3, Insurance cover for S Pedelec bikes.
We recommend taking out fully comprehensive insurance for e-bikes, high-quality bikes and cargo bikes. This protects the bike from theft, accidental damage to the bike, vandalism, construction errors and damage from external influences such as lightning strikes. The insurance cover applies worldwide, including when you take your bike with you on a trip. In the event of theft, the insurance will also cover the damage if your bike is stolen somewhere other than your home. The prerequisite is that the bike was locked with a U-lock or chain lock.
E bikes have expensive components such as battery, display and motor. If these have a technical fault, the resulting damage is covered by the insurance. The same applies to components of a cargo bike. A fully comprehensive bike insurance is available from around 7 euros per month, depending on the value of the bike. For high-priced bikes, the insurance premium can be around 25 euros per month.

Does the liability insurance cover for bicycle damage?
Liability insurance only pays for damage that the policyholder caused to a third party while renting an e-bike. That means in the context of an accident when a third person is injured. If you rent a bike from a commercial rental company and damage the bike, the liability insurance will not pay. For this reason, most commercial lenders require a deposit for the duration of the loan.
