The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office is conducting an investigation into an incident that allegedly occurred on the night of September 1 to 2, during the Peace Festivities in Sint-Niklaas.
According to The last news Vooruit chairman Conner Rousseau allegedly insulted some police officers standing in front of a café. According to the officers, there was also ‘racist language’ and they were urged to go to other places in the city where their presence was more required. Rousseau was not arrested, but a report was drawn up of the incident.
The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office confirms that it has been notified of an incident and that an investigation has been started. They also do not want to comment further. The public prosecutor’s office will now have to decide whether it wants to effectively prosecute Rousseau for the incident. For this, Rousseau’s parliamentary immunity must in principle be lifted.
“I have not been officially informed that the public prosecutor’s office is investigating this,” Rousseau responds. “That day I actually went to a café in Sint-Niklaas and spoke to several police officers there. I had drunk too much, but in my memory the tenor of those conversations was rather joking and friendly. I don’t remember exactly what was said, but what was written about it surprises me very much. I hope that the public prosecutor’s office will invite me soon so that I can quickly get clarity about what exactly is going on.”
