Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has deemed the Saudi-Chinese rapprochement a direct result of what he described as “bad American policy,” criticizing the president’s administration reports Joe Biden with US allies.
Pompeo, secretary of state in former President Donald Trump’s administration, said in an interview with the “Fox News” channel, in response to a question about Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Saudi Arabia, that “when you don’t become a partner with your friends and allies and taunt them, and you do nothing to talk back to your opponents.” Like Xi Jinping, we see this kind of cover-up behavior.”
He added: “For the first time, we ended 40 years of American policy and realized that the Communist Party of China was the greatest external threat to the United States. And when we did, our friends and partners all over the world have joined us.”
Pompeo said the Biden administration, when it arrived at the White House, “was soft on China” and referred to Biden’s statements in which he promised to make Saudi Arabia a “pariah state”.
“When you do these things, you hurt the American people across the country,” Pompeo said, “and what you saw happening in the kingdom (during Xi Jinping’s visit) is a direct result of American bad policy.”
He added: “You have to stay with your friends, you have to be with your partners, you have to answer to your opponents, or your friends will start to protect themselves. They will make friends to protect themselves if they can’t count on America to be a good partner and friend» .
