The idea of an album dedicated to Christmas time has been in the mind of the group “Instrumenti” for a long time.
“This is, I would say, a moment of release where we really express what’s in our hearts, which is always in our Christmas mood, but I’ll be honest, it’s felt like there’s something missing that we want to listen to. And then we fill that gap,” says musician Jānis Šipkēvics.
“When writing such an album, we tried all the time to stick to that warm, homely, cozy home feeling. To that family feeling. We kind of tried all the time to imagine how we ourselves want to feel when celebrating Christmas,” says musician Reinis Sējans. “I guess the main task was to create a simply pleasant, cozy, warm feeling. There are many very beautiful Christmas songs, and we all know them very well. We also have our favorite Christmas songs, and some of them we arranged in a very relaxed and simple approach to home music making and we included in this album, and just as spontaneously, some songs of our own arose, which were beautifully included in the total of ten songs.”

The musicians admit that one of the main goals this time was to let the music flow.
“This feeling of lightness, I think, was certainly promoted by the fact that we had also decided ourselves that we would do this very skillfully. We will not sit around, we will not try to make some complicated, musically technical manipulations,” states Jānis Šipkēvics.
“In my opinion, this is the most natural “Instruments” album and the simplest. And in some sense, from this aspect, also the coolest “Instruments” album,” continues Šipkēvics. “This kind of work process – I recommend that you try it from time to time. Maybe you can’t start with it, because at the beginning, when you start working, at the beginning of your work, you are full of doubts and you don’t know, and you want the best. Over the years, you realize that the longest not the best. Sometimes quick decisions, the first ones, are the right ones.”
Since the musicians have been playing together for many years, the fact that both were in their own countries did not hinder the process of making the album. “It was also a really good stress reliever,” admits Reinis Sējāns. “Because I realized that Shipit is working on something in Stockholm, he has some tasks that need to be completed. How those tasks will be completed, we cannot fully control. We simply rely on the fact that he will do according to the best of his conscience what he can and wants to do, and it’s the same with Gati here in Riga. So there was no time to actually mess something up. It’s such a cool approach, I think.”
