Madrid. This Monday, the Caja de las Letras of the Cervantes Institute received the original manuscript of the ‘Iliad’, by the writer Alfonso Reyes, which arrived in Spain after the delivery ceremony in Monterrey (Mexico) in May of this year and serves to reinforce the “link” between the institution and the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL).
The legacy, which enters box number 1633, has been guarded by Cervantes since the institution received it from the Secretary of Extension and Culture of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, José Javier Villarreal, in the Alfonsina Chapel of the Library University.
The deposit consists of the manuscript ‘Brief Commentary on the Iliad’, written in the handwriting of the Mexican thinker and which he gave to his friend and writer Pedro Guillén. This document expresses his opinions on Homer’s work and includes some drawings, a little-known artistic facet of Reyes, who only reached the first nine cantos.
The director of the Cervantes, Luis García Montero, has assured that this legacy represents an “exciting memory” of the figure of the Mexican philosopher, who has left “a very important mark” in the cultural history of both countries and in “the best memory.” of the Spanish-speaking community.
“Words have the power to transform the world and Alfonso Reyes managed to build bridges between Latin America and Europe, as well as between tradition and modernity,” defended the rector of the UANL, Santos Guzmán, who also pointed out that with this deposit the journey made by Reyes after spending a period of time in Madrid is repeated.
Cervantes highlights Alfonso Reyes’ figure as writings, but also his work as a translator, academic, journalist, influential exile in Spain and relevant diplomat in the years after the Mexican revolution, both in Europe and South America.
In this sense, he praises the “crucial” role he played in the process of attracting Spanish republican exile to Mexico after the Civil War and the shelter of a large part of those intellectuals under the mantle of the College of Mexico, of which he was director.
His literature explores different registers: poems, essays, narrative, theater or literary criticism. In addition, it formed one of the most important libraries in Mexico, which contains a huge number of books and magazines that make up the Alfonso Reyes Fund, and which since 1980 has been kept in the Alfonsina Chapel University Library of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León.
This collection has great value for its original editions, classic works, books published in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, which are a record of the history and culture of humanity. It is possible to find books dedicated to the author by the Spanish Juan Ramón Jiménez, Miguel de Unamuno, Manuel Azaña, Azorín or Ramón Menéndez Pidal, and the Latin Americans Miguel Ángel Asturias, Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriela Mistral, Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz, David Alfaro Siqueiros , Alejo Carpentier, Carlos Fuentes or Alfonsina Storni, among others.
