Institute: complaints from stutterers worse because of corona

Research by the Amsterdam UMC has already shown that the mental health of children and young people has deteriorated in times of the corona crisis. “One of the problems that has arisen from this is an increase in the number of people who experience stuttering,” the Del Ferro Institute said in a press release.

People seek help

The people who ‘could reasonably live with the stuttering, as it were, literally got so stuck that they saw no other way out than to seek help’, says the institute.

What is stuttering and why is it?

Stuttering arises because something goes wrong with the control (from the brain) of the nerves and the muscles that have to do with speech and language processes.

It is assumed that someone who stutters has a predisposition for this. This means that someone who stutters probably has a stuttering gene. Even if no one else in your family stutters, you may be predisposed to stuttering. But 85 percent of people who stutter have someone in the family who also stutters or has stuttered. Many children who stutter have a father or mother who also stutters or has stuttered.

Research agency DirectResearch also conducted research into the mental situation of young people last year on behalf of OpenUp. This showed that millennials experience more tension, fear and stress due to corona than older people. 27 percent of millennials needed to see a psychologist last October.
