Despite the fact that schools were closed for a long time due to the corona measures, and a government coordination team urged schools to improve their ventilation, relatively little action has been taken, according to the industry association Indoor Climate Netherlands. Orders have also been postponed. This would have caused a significant backlog of installation of these systems.
Due to the corona outbreak, a lot of attention has been paid to good ventilation systems. RIVM advises to ventilate well to prevent the spread of Covid-19, although it is unknown to what extent air exchange prevents the spread of the virus. A tour shows that ventilation companies have been busy with installations and maintenance of the systems since the start of the pandemic.

According to Wijma, when educational institutions do decide to install a ventilation system, it is a slow process. For example, many parties, such as consultants, contractors and municipal project managers, are involved in the installation of these types of systems. Several installations that were planned this summer have been postponed to the autumn or even to the summer of 2022, partly due to the complexity.
Wijma adds that installers are currently struggling with shortages of materials, such as steel and wood, which makes the job even more difficult. “A small chain reaction is now taking place, and it should not have happened if people had acted in time,” said the chairman.
“If there are no ventilation systems, these schools will probably just open the windows,” Wijma thinks. According to him, this does not guarantee that enough fresh air will come in. “In addition, pollen can blow in from outside, which causes allergic persons.”
