Install iPadOS 15 in public beta on your iPad

Apple deployed this morning the first public beta of iPadOS 15. It is now possible to install it on all iPad compatible.

Presented during the last WWDC alongside iOS 15, iPadOS 15 is a bit like the version of the break. Much more successful than the previous version, this new version brings its share of novelties. They have all been detailed in this article.

If you were waiting for the public beta before launching, then now is your lucky day since it has been available since this morning.

Warning: It is important to note that a beta version, even public, is not in essence a stable version. It will therefore be preferable not to install this beta on an iPad that you use every day or for work.

Step 1: make a backup of your iPad

Again, this is a matter of common sense. The first thing to do before installing this public beta will be to back up your iPad.

And this for a fairly obvious reason: a backup will allow you to restore it and therefore revert to the latest stable version of the platform. If you don’t, you’ll be forced to stay on iPadOS 15, which also means you won’t be upgrading to a stable version until school starts.

To back up your iPad, you have two solutions:

  • Backup iPad from your computer;
  • Backup iPad to iCloud;

If you opt for this second choice, then all you have to do is go to the settings of your tablet and hit the save button. Be careful, the procedure can be quite long, especially if you have a sluggish connection and a large volume of data to back up.

Step 2: Enroll iPad in the Beta Program

If you’ve already installed a developer preview on one of your devices, then you won’t be caught off guard. The procedure for installing iPadOS 15 on an iPad is essentially the same.

All you have to do is register your tablet in the beta program set up by Apple, download a profile on it, install it and update the device.

More concretely, here are the steps you must follow:

  1. Launch Safari from your iPad;
  2. Come on at this address ;
  3. Your iPad will ask you to connect with your account;
  4. Tap on the “continue” button;
  5. Identify yourself;
  6. A new page will load;
  7. Click on the “iPadOS” tab;
  8. A new page will load;
  9. Go down a little to the “Install Profile” part;
  10. Click on the blue “Download Profile” button;
  11. Validate by clicking on the “Authorize” button in the pop-up;
  12. A message is displayed, saying that the profile has been downloaded successfully;
  13. Go to the settings of the iPad;
  14. Tap on the “downloaded profile” button;
  15. The profile you just downloaded appears;
  16. Click on the “install” button;
  17. The conditions of use appear;
  18. If you agree, validate by tapping on “install”;
  19. The profile will settle down;
  20. Your iPad will ask you to restart it;
  21. Do it;
  22. Once the iPad has restarted, go back to settings;
  23. Then go to the updates menu;
  24. Your iPad will offer you to download and install iPadOS 15;

Again, I draw your attention that the image is quite heavy. You will therefore have to be patient.

How to get back to iPadOS 14

If iPadOS 15 doesn’t appeal to you, or if it’s paddling a bit too much on your iPad, you may well be able to go back. All you need to do is connect your iPad to your computer and start its restore from Finder.

The process can be quite lengthy and you will have to follow all the given steps. Your iPad will then ask to restart it and you will end up in iPadOS 14.

Note, however, that you will also have to take the time to delete the profile of iPadOS 15 for it to work. You just have to go to your tablet’s settings, open it and hit the delete button to do it.
