Instagram Will Introduce New Parental Control Feature Next Year

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Bunch Instagram, Adam Mosseri, through his official website announced that he will launch a new parental control feature on his platform in March 2022. In the post it is explained that Instagram will allow parents and guardians to see how much time their teens are spending on its platform.

“Setting a time limit, including getting a notification if their child reports someone,” Mosseri said on Tuesday, December 7, 2021.

Feature those controls will be announced as a new feature pack designed to make the platform a safer place, especially for teenage users.

Although Mosseri’s post said this security feature had been in the works for a ‘long time’, the announcement came after a series of damaging revelations about social media that, especially internal documents leaked by former Facebook employee Frances Haugen, which show that Instagram is aware that its service can exacerbate problems for its teenage female users.

This week Mosseri will testify before a Senate committee, where he is likely to be questioned about Instagram’s impact on its young users.

“We are also developing an educational center for parents and guardians to offer tips and tutorials on children’s use of social media,” said Instagram.

In the near future, the social media made by Meta will also launch the ‘Take a Break’ feature which was tested last month. This opt-in feature will prompt users to step away from the app after they’ve scrolled for a certain amount of time, such as 10, 20, or 30 minutes.

The notification will prompt users to enable the feature, and Instagram says 90 percent of users in its tests have left a reminder once they’ve been set. The feature will be rolling out in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, and will be available globally early next year.

Other new security features include changes to how Instagram handles flagging permissions for teen users, which will roll out to everyone early next year. By default, Mosseri says the service will no longer allow users to tag or mention teenage users.

There is also a new mass delete feature coming in January 2022, which will let users delete their posts, likes and comments in bulk. “It is designed to help users manage their digital footprint,” said Mosseri.

Mosseri’s post also goes into detail about the safety features that are in the early development stages. This confirms the service continues to explore plans to ‘push’ people away from topics they have been thinking about for too long.

When he announced the feature with Take a Break in October, Vice President of Global at Meta Nick Clegg said it would be used as content that may not be conducive to user well-being.

Instagram hasn’t given any indication of when the feature might roll out. The service is also exploring the introduction of more stringent settings to control what content is recommended to users. “The goal is to limit their exposure to potentially harmful or sensitive content or accounts,” said Clegg.
