(Reuters) – Instagram will require its users to provide or confirm their date of birth, a new rule that aims to protect younger Internet users, the social network, owned by Facebook, said on Monday.
Instagram for a while considered developing a version of its application dedicated to under-13s, but Democratic members of the US Congress asked it to abandon the project, accusing it of having failed in the past to “protect children”.
In a post posted online, Instagram explains that it will use the date of birth to “ensure we bring appropriate experiences to the right age group.”
Last month, the social network announced that the accounts of its users under 16 would by default be configured in “private” mode when they register.
Instagram specifies that it is aware of the fact that some users will give a false date of birth and explains that it is studying technological solutions to this difficulty.
