Social media giant Instagram has announced that it has taken new measures to stop harassment against young users on the platform. The move by Meta, Instagram’s parent company, comes after the company faced a lawsuit filed against it in the US and increased backlash from families and parents of teenagers and children who ‘ use of the platform.
DO NOT TAKE SCREENSHOTS ON INSTAGRAM
Screenshots or screen recordings of messages that disappear in Instagram direct messages will be banned. This means that when a user tries to take a screenshot of an image that should only be displayed once, they get a black screen.
As an additional layer of protection, if the sender allows playback of the image or video, Instagram will prevent people from opening that content on the web.
The new feature will not prevent criminals from capturing the image or video by recording it with another device.
New features for screenshot and screen recording will also be made essential in Facebook Messenger application.
PROTECT YOUTH INSTAGRAM
Meta said it will introduce several new features to protect teenagers and children from sextortion, a type of blackmail that aims to get victims to pay moneyusing images or conversations sexual.
Starting Thursday, Instagram will provide users with specific indicators in the application, such as how recent the account is and whether there is any suspicious activity.
The platform also prevents fake accounts from sending follow requests to teens by blocking the requests or moving them to the teen’s spam folder.
A new nudity protection feature will be enabled for all Instagram users under 18, the company said.
INSTAGRAM BLURS NUDE PHOTOS
If a nude photo is sent to a young user, Instagram will blur the photo and send a warning message about the content before the person can open the photo or video.
The latest efforts follow the launch of new Teen Meta Accounts in September to further protect teen users and give parents more visibility.
Teen Accounts will be private by default and private messages will be limited; therefore young people will only receive messages from people they follow or are already in contact with.
Meta also cracks down on young people who lie about their age when creating a profile and are asked to confirm their date of birth.
The social media giant said it is working on new technology that proactively detects teenage accounts pretending to be adults and automatically places them in the restricted teen version.
