Instagram Tackles Story Overload with New “Missed Highlights” Feature
Instagram users may soon find it easier to stay connected with friends and family. The social media giant, owned by Meta, is currently testing a new feature aimed at combating the ever-growing deluge of content on the platform. This new feature surfaces previously unseen Story Highlights from mutual followers, ensuring users don’t miss vital updates.
The test, first noticed by social media expert Ahmed Ghanem (Ahmed Ghanem’s Tweet), adds unseen Story Highlights to the end of the Stories tray – the area at the top of your Instagram feed where you view Stories from those you follow. “We’re always working on new ways to help people connect in Stories and are testing bringing recent Highlights to the end of the tray with a small group of people,” a Meta spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch.
With the increasing popularity of Reels and sponsored content, it’s become increasingly easy to miss updates from close friends and family. This new feature directly addresses this issue, prioritizing authentic connections over the constant stream of algorithmic content. The feature focuses specifically on Story highlights – curated collections of Stories saved to a user’s profile – rather than ephemeral Stories that disappear after 24 hours.
According to Meta, users will only see Story Highlights they’ve missed from the past week. Importantly, these missed Highlights will only appear *after* you’ve viewed all the current Stories in your tray. This means users with extensive followings might need to scroll through a notable number of Stories to reach the “Missed Highlights” section.
