Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Instagram started asking younger users to confirm birthdays so they can enjoy age-appropriate content.
According to the quoted press statement Reuters, Tuesday (31/8), Instagram will use users’ birthday information to ensure they access age-appropriate content using social media.
In July, Instagram said it would make the accounts of new users under 16 private.
Instagram said it would ask users to confirm their date and year of birth when opening the app. Failure to do so will result in Instagram sending a pop-up warning users under 16 for not providing confirmation.
At a certain point, users who do not provide confirmation of the date and year of birth are required to fill in the data if they want to continue using the social media.
The protocol will only be experienced by a number of Instagram users who previously did not fill in their date and year of birth.
According to Instagram, the move was taken because they believed some users had faked their birthdays to use the social media. Therefore, Instagram states that it is developing new technology as a way out of this problem.
