Instagram Reels Officially Launched in 50 Countries, Ready to Compete with TikTok

KOMPAS.com – After being introduced first in Brazil with the nickname “Cenas”, Instagram now launches a new feature called Reels globally in more than 50 countries.

Reels is a recording feature video short similar TikTok which allows users to record and edit short videos that are 15 seconds long.

Reels itself is not an application, but a new feature embedded in Instagram Camera.

Similar to TikTok, users can create short Reels videos accompanied by a variety of music, effects, and video speed levels directly from the camera feature in the Instagram application.

Later, Reels videos created by users can be shared with friends via the Instagram feature Stories, Feeds, maupun Direct Message.

If shared on Instagram Stories, the Reels video will disappear after 24 hours, while if uploaded to the Feed, the video will be displayed on the user’s profile page, just like when they upload an IGTV photo or content.

The user can then control whether the Reels video can be seen by others (public) or not (private). If it is public, the content will be searchable by other users on the special Reels page that is loaded in the Explore feature.

On that particular page, users can see various Reels content that can be traced by scrolling the screen upward (scroll up), similar to the “For Your Page” feature in TikTok.

Although impressed by imitating TikTok, Instagram’s Product Director, Robby Stein, claims that Reels is different from the ByteDance application. He acknowledged that TikTok was indeed a pioneer who popularized content with short video formats.

“In my opinion, TikTok deserves respect because it has popularized the short video format,” Stein was quoted as saying KompasTekno from TheVerge, Thursday (6/8/2020).

“But in the end, there are no two products that are exactly the same, so are our products (different),” Stein said.

Instagram Reels itself currently has been poured gradually in about 50 countries, including the United States, Britain, Japan, Australia, India, and several other countries.

However, this feature seems not yet present in Indonesia. Because, from observation KompasTekno Thursday (6/8/2020) morning, the Reels feature has not yet appeared on Instagram Camera on the Instagram app, either the regular or beta versions.
