Instagram makes changes to algorithm that sorts stories after Palestinian censorship accusations | Technology

O Instagram announced last Sunday (30) changes in its algorithm that sorts stories. From now on, original posts and those shared from feed photos will be treated equally.

The change comes after employees of Facebook, which owns Instagram, accuse social networks of censoring pro-Palestinian posts amid the conflict with Israel in Gaza. The workers’ dissatisfaction was reported by the newspaper “Financial Times” and by the website “Buzzfeed News”.

In the “Financial Times,” a Facebook spokesman said that this issue has been addressed by the company for a long time and that the change was not a reaction to the censorship accusations.

Facebook told the G1 who prioritized original stories on Instagram because he understood that they attracted more user interest than posts that share photos from the feed.

The social network also stated that it registered an increase in the number of people sharing feed photos through stories since last year. According to the platform, the priority for original stories made these publications have a negative impact on reach.

“Stories that share feed posts from other accounts aren’t getting the reach people expect, and that’s not a good experience,” Facebook admitted.

“It also made people believe that we were suppressing stories about specific topics or points of view. We want to be very clear – that’s not the case. This applies to any post that is shared in stories, regardless of the subject,” he continued.

The platform has promised to give equal weight to shared feed posts and original stories over time, although it still understands that users prefer original stories.
