Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Instagram limits the direct messaging (DM) feature on its platform. This is done to protect users from spam attacks via DM.
This restriction will make it difficult for foreign accounts [bukan following] to send a DM multiple times to a user. When a foreign account wants to send DM to an account, there are two restrictions that will get in the way.
First, only one message can be sent. If the user accepts the chat request, then the foreign account can send more messages.
Second, the messages sent are also limited to text format. Instagram removed the feature for sending visual content in the form of photos and videos by foreign accounts.
The company started testing the DM restriction feature at the end of last June. Previously, Instagram already had several features to combat spam, for example ‘Hidden Words’ which hide messages with certain keywords and emojis.

The company explains that women often receive unsolicited nude photos via their DMs. This feature effectively reduces sexual harassment through visual content, although it won’t stop perpetrators from sending abusive texts.
