Instagram Launches New “Night Alerts” Feature to Control Teenagers’ App Usage

The social networking application “Instagram” has launched a new feature for teenagers’ accounts, to limit the periods of their use of the application, according to what “Meta Platforms”, the company that owns the application, announced.

The “Night Alerts” feature will appear when any teenage user spends more than 10 minutes on Instagram sections, such as: Reels or DM, late at night.

This alert will remind teenage users that it is late, and urge them to close the application and go to sleep, according to the TechCrunch website, which specializes in technology topics.

The website quoted Instagram as saying that after 10 p.m., teenage users will receive alerts saying: “Isn’t this break time?” Then the message: “It is getting late, consider closing Instagram.”

He added that these alerts tonight will appear automatically, and the user will not be able to turn them off, which means that the user will not have the option to turn on and off this feature. However, the user can ignore messages and continue using Instagram during the night.

It is noteworthy that the competing application “Tik Tok” launched a similar feature last March, to alert users that it is time to stop running the application and go to sleep.

The new nightly alerts feature joins a group of new features on Instagram aimed at reducing the time teenagers spend using it.

The application has already launched the “Take a Break” feature, which appears on the entire screen in front of the user, reminding him of the need to take a break from using “Instagram.” It also launched the “Quiet Mode” feature, which allows the user to turn off the notification bell and inform other users that the user is unavailable for a period of time.

Meta also announced earlier this month its intention to impose automatic restrictions on the type of content that teenagers can view on Instagram and Facebook, as restrictions will be imposed on access to harmful content, such as posts related to self-harm and images of violence.
