Instagram Launches New Feature to Enhance User Protection in Direct Chat Service

The social networking application, Instagram, launched a new feature aimed at improving the protection of users from the appearance of unwanted videos and images through the direct chat service, (Direct Messenger), as the launch of the new feature came a few weeks after the start of its testing. With the new feature, people who want to send chat requests to people they don’t follow will face two new restrictions. The first limitation is that instead of sending an unlimited number of chat requests to someone they don’t follow, they will be allowed to send a single message to the person. But when the person accepts the chat request from the user, the latter will be able to send him any number of messages. As for the second restriction, it is represented in preventing the user from sending any photos or videos via direct messages to anyone who does not follow him, except after the latter accepts the direct chat request, and the user will be able to send a text message only to the person who does not follow him. And the Instagram platform said that the new restrictions will protect users from receiving unwanted photos and videos from people who are not registered on their followers lists, and that an unregistered person will not be able to send more than one message to the user.

The platform indicated that the new feature will be particularly useful for women who usually suffer from unwanted messages through the live chat service.

“We want people to feel confident and in control when they open their message box” on the Instagram platform, Cindy Southworth, head of women’s safety at Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms, said in an emailed statement. “That’s why we’re testing new features that ensure users don’t receive repeated photos, videos, and messages from someone who doesn’t follow them until they accept their follow request. We are grateful for the feedback we received from the community of users who participated in the experimental use of the feature.”

TechCrunch, which specializes in technology issues, stated that the new feature is added to the existing restrictions on Instagram, which aim to protect users from unwanted content. Among these features is the “hidden words” feature that works when direct chat requests contain offensive words, phrases, or emojis, as messages are directed directly to a hidden file. The Instagram platform also contains a “limit” feature that protects the user from any sudden increase in the number of unwanted comments or direct chat requests.
