By mistake, Instagram kept photos that had long been deleted by a user.
It is not unusual for a photo deleted from an online service to remain for a few weeks – even up to 90 days – on servers, without the user or others having direct access to it. But at Instagram, security researcher Saugat Pokharel managed to request photos more than a year after they were deleted.
Pokharel asked, according to Techcrunch, in October of last year to Instagram a copy of his photos and messages and discovered that the data in question which he had deleted more than a year before, could still be downloaded.
He reported the issue to Instagram, which recently resolved it. The company recognizes that this was a bug in the system, which has since been corrected. Pokharel received a reward of six thousand dollars for his discovery.
