When you delete a photo or message, you also expect that it has indeed disappeared. However, that turned out not to be the case on Instagram, where a security expert found that messages were kept for at least a year.

It is Saugat Pokharel, who received $ 6,000 from Instagram for his discovery as a reward for reporting the bug. He discovered an error by downloading all his data via Instagram, something that has been possible for a few years (you can also download your Facebook data). Among the dates, he found photos and private messages that he had deleted a long time ago. Instagram claims that they only keep data for a maximum of 90 days after the removal date.
The bug was discovered in October 2019 and only fixed last month, but the social media platform says it has not been exploited by third parties. Either way, it’s a good reminder for anyone to not share anything online that you don’t want to see permanently appear on the internet.
