Instagram is developing a tool that makes nude images in private messages unrecognizable. The tool will soon be turned on by default for minors, the company writes.
Instagram takes the measure to protect young people against abuse of nude images and sextortionwhere victims are blackmailed with nude images.
If a nude image is found in a private message, the person who wants to send it will first be notified whether he, she or they are sure. The recipient receives a blurred copy and can then determine whether the original photo is shown. Instagram reminds users that they don’t have to comment on the photo. There are also options to block the sender and report the chat.
Social media platforms receive a lot of criticism for not protecting underage users enough. For example, Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, has been sued by dozens of states in the US. They are said to do too little to protect young users against online child molesters.
Instagram says it is also developing other tools to protect young people. It is not yet clear what they will look like.
