Instagram, in the face of criticism from Kylie Jenner and others, tries to explain itself.

Instagram contre le Great Celebrity Gang-Up ?

The photo-sharing app, which is owned by Meta, has come under fire this week due to its evolution over time. The pile-on started on Monday, when Kylie Jenner, the beauty mogul with 361 million Instagram followers, shared a picture on the site that said: “Remake Instagram Instagram. (Stop trying to be tiktok, I just want to see cute pics of my friends.) Sincerely, everyone.

With a “PLEASEEEEEEEE” on her Instagram Story, Ms Jenner, who has the third most subscribers on the platform, lit the flame of celebrity criticism.

“PRETTY PLEASE,” Kim Kardashian, Ms Jenner’s half-sister and seventh most-followed Instagram user, echoed in a later story.

On Tuesday, Instagram’s head Adam Mosseri tried to calm users’ anger over how the app rolled out features that make it more akin to TikTok, the hugely popular Chinese video app. Instagram fears that TikTok is stealing the attention of its users.

To avoid a decline, Instagram recently began testing where videos were prioritized in user feeds and photos and videos took up the entire screen, top to bottom, instead of just part of it. Last week, it announced that all videos would be released as reels, which were presented as short video montages, and launched features that encourage collaboration with other users.

In a publication On Tuesday, Mosseri said Instagram was moving to video and people were liking and sharing more videos than photos, regardless of changes to the platform. “I have to be honest,” he said. “I believe more and more of Instagram will become video over time.”
