Instagram, originally launched as a photo-sharing social network, is getting a big update this Monday. No, it’s not the long-awaited iPad version but a visual refresh of its app. In addition to a brighter icon, the company also developed its own typography, while highlighting its focus on creators.
Instagram gets a makeover
Today, we’re bringing new energy and purpose to our colors, font, logo, and other brand elements with a refreshed visual identity. Our new system is designed to enable continuous evolution and help us create more immersive and inclusive experiences for our community.
The new gradient has apparently changed, we are not really convinced despite a explication grandiloquent:
Our vibrant gradient has been re-imagined using an innovative 3D modeling process to appear illuminated and alive. The Instagram gradient, made up of our brand colors, is the foundation of our comprehensive color system. Through illumination, the gradient signals moments of discovery in our marketing, logo, and even in the app, as seen in Create mode, Instagram Story stickers, and rings.
With a new typography called “Instagram Sans” which will be used on advertisements, the app and the website, the company wants to highlight its identity. Users will even be able to enjoy it on Stories and Reels.
When designing this new typeface, our goal was to make Instagram Sans accessible globally. We partnered with language experts around the world to adapt the typeface to global scripts including Arabic, Thai, and Japanese. We want to support all of our creators and members of our community who push culture forward to fully express themselves in the language of their choice.
Finally, Instagram clarifies that this new design “places content at the center, emphasizing simplicity and personal expression”. This isn’t the first time the company has said it’s focused on creators. Enforcement manager Adam Mosseri points this out almost weekly.
Unfortunately, the iPad application is still not up to date, yet Apple’s tablets offer a magnificent screen for viewing images and videos of all kinds. In any case, all the new features are on version 236, which arrived today on the App Store.
