When users first open the Artifact app, they are greeted with a main feed featuring articles from major media outlets such as the New York Times to smaller bloggers.

The more articles a user reads, Artifact will start showing a selection of other similar articles that users might find interesting. According to Systrom, Artifact’s recommendation system prioritizes how long users spend reading certain topics, not just clicks and comments.

In the future Artifact will also have a social component. Systrom and Krieger plan to launch a feed highlighting articles other users follow, along with their comments on that content.

In addition, there will be features such as direct messages that allow users to discuss certain articles privately. Currently Artifact has just opened a waiting list registration and is only available in the United States.

After launching Instagram together in 2010, Systrom and Krieger sold the photo-sharing app to Meta (formerly Facebook) for $1 billion in 2012.

Systrom and Krieger left Instagram and Meta in 2018. Reportedly the two had clashed with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the direction of Instagram and the desire to better integrate it with Facebook.
