Instagram has started testing a new security feature called Limits, which will provide users with the ability to temporarily lock their accounts to avoid any potential interaction when they feel they are being harassed.
The announcement of the feature came through a video shared by Adam Mosseri, director of Instagram, in which he highlighted the importance of people feeling safe and comfortable on the platform. In turn, he asserted that “racism and incitement to hatred have no place” in the social network.
“We know that people sometimes find themselves in temporary moments of real risk and pain, and we want to give them tools to protect themselves in those situations,” said the executive. The function will be available within the privacy controls, in a new section called Limits.
By activating it, it will be possible to limit the comments and messages of specific groups of followers, including those that are recent and those that the user does not follow back. This classification is due to the fact that these types of accounts can be a source of spam or have been created just to harass.
It will also allow establishing a duration for restriction, which can be several days or even weeks. This new Instagram feature will first be tested on mobile devices in select countries before a wider rollout.
In the post, Mosseri He also condemned the acts of racist harassment suffered on the platform by English footballers Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka by angry fans following England’s defeat against Italy in the final of Euro 2020.
Also, he mentioned several Instagram tools that could help people deal with bullying in the red social more directly. This includes blocking, restricting, and filtering offensive words, which can be used in both comments and direct messages.
