When Instagram launched its category of short videos, the social network always had in mind to compete with the dominant player in the sector: TikTok. While many Instagram users regularly post Reels, what Instagram doesn’t like is that far too many videos have the TikTok watermark.

Instagram refuses the highlighting of certain Reels
It was last year that Instagram embarked on the great adventure of short videos. Noting the impressive scale from TikTok around the world, Mark Zuckerberg’s social network also wanted its share of the pie.
Called “Reels”, the concept of Instagram’s short videos is exactly the same as the Chinese application, you find videos of less than a minute with music in the background.
When the Reels launched, Instagram was persuaded that its users would differentiate between its service and TikTok. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned … From the first weeks of the Reels’ availability, Instagram users were mass-uploading short videos. coming from TikTok, which continued to intensify in the months that followed.
To get a little publicity, the Chinese application has set up a watermark which moves to different places in the video, it is clearly impossible not to notice it.
This is precisely what annoys Instagram.
Ideally, the social network would want its users to completely ignore TikTok when scrolling through Reels, however this is impossible since the vast majority of videos are not “new content”.
If Instagram does not want to conflict with its users and ban videos of this kind, a restriction The highlighting of the Reels began to take place.
In a post on the account @creators, Instagram announces that it is taking action against videos that are content taken from a competing application. The post explains:
We’ve learned a lot by surveying our community and seeing how people interact with Recommended Reels. Users tell us they want to see entertaining, fun, and interesting content in places like the Reels tab.
We have also heard that some low video quality Reels (i.e. blurry due to low resolution) or visibly recycled content from other apps (i.e. containing logos or watermarks) makes the Reels experience less satisfying. Therefore, we make this content less visible in places like the Reels tab.As we get better, we’ll continue to share best practices here on @creators so you have the latest information. Check them out and let us know what works for you in the comments below.
If the Reels work quite well (thanks to their excellent integration into the application), Instagram’s short videos still encounter difficulties facing TikTok which remains far ahead with its hundreds of millions of users around the world. These new measures should allow the Reels to take off and to stand out competition. In the logic of things, if the videos coming from TikTok are no longer highlighted, users will gradually stop to post some.
