Instagram Asks Users to Stop Posting TikTok to Reels

Jakarta

Instagram announced that it will change the algorithm on its platform to prioritize original content over content repost or reposted from social media other. These changes will be applied in the main feed and Reels so you don’t get flooded with Tiktok.

“It’s specifically focused on original ideas. If you create something from scratch, you should get more credit than if you re-share something you found from elsewhere,” said Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, in a video posted on Twitter, as quoted from TechCrunch, Thursday (21/4/2022).

“We will do more to try and value original content more, especially compared to reposted content.”

Simply put, Instagram wants its users to create original content so that it can be promoted and reach more people. Meanwhile, repost content from other social media such as TikTok or Twitter and content taken from other Instagram users will be suppressed. Reposting Tiktok content to Reels is something that many netizens do.

Instagram explained that they would reduce Reels content recommendations, which are reposts of content already in the app. This Meta-owned app will also reduce the recommendation of accounts combining and re-sharing other users’ content.

Instagram emphasizes that the more content that is recommended on its platform, the more credit, distribution, growth and monetization should go to its original creators.

When asked how Instagram will determine what content is original, Mosseri says it’s a pretty tricky thing. He said Instagram will make a classification to predict how likely the authenticity of a content is. Instagram will also see things like who is in the video and whether the app has seen the video before.

Responding to a question from social media consultant Matt Navarra, Mosseri said Instagram was already working to highlight original content, but they would continue to focus in this direction.

“As we lean more towards recommendations, it becomes increasingly important for us not to over-value aggregators, as that would be bad for content creators, and therefore bad for Instagram in the long run,” Mosseri replied.

Instagram is indeed filled with popular meme accounts that repost other users’ Reels or content from other social media. These accounts often get more engagement than their original creators, and this change means they can’t reach the widest range of users they currently have.

In addition to the new algorithm, Mosseri also highlighted two recently launched features Instagram namely product tags and enhanced tags. Product tags allow users to tag products from a business in their posts, while enhanced tags allow users to share and view creator contributions and roles in a photo or video post.
