Instagram Adds New MySpace-Like Music Feature

Instagram is adding a new music feature where you can show off your tastes on your profile, reminiscent of MySpace in the 2000s.

While you could hear your friend’s favorite song every time you logged into your MySpace profile, Instagram is making music a more central feature. “Now you can brag about your musical taste by adding a song to your profile,” Instagram wrote in a statement on social media.

Songs can already be added to Stories, and more recently to Posts, but this update means that music will be able to be added directly to your profile without needing to post anything new.

To add music to your profile, go to your profile settings and select “Add music to your profile.” From there, you can search for songs or explore the “For You” section.

Once you choose a title, you will have the option to include a specific 30-second clip on your profile. This clip will remain in place until you decide to update it.

However, unlike Myspace, songs will not play automatically. Visitors to a user’s profile will have the option to play or pause the added song whenever they want.

Social media users reacted to the news on Twitter. “Myspace is back, nature is recovering,” one user said.

Another added: “If someone hates the music feature on Instagram profiles, they just hate MySpace. I don’t know, but I’m excited. Also bring back the top 10 friends so we can start ruining things.”

However, some users are less happy with the music features added to the app. “Instagram is so loud right now that your photos don’t need music,” one person said.

Earlier this month, Universal Music Group (UMG) revealed an expanded Meta licensing deal, with one of the commitments being that artists would be fairly compensated.

The company also wants to tackle unauthorized AI-generated content that could affect artists and songwriters.

According to The VergeInstagram is launching the feature in collaboration with pop star Sabrina Carpenter. Carpenter’s official Instagram profile featured a teaser for “Taste” from her now-out album ahead of the track’s official release.

Sabrina Carpenter’s “Taste” is out now and comes with a music video featuring Jenna Ortega.
