The platform Instagram is in the Türkiye blocked The social network was blocked by a decision on August 2, wrote the state-affiliated news agency DHA, citing the Turkish Information and Communications Technology Authority.
The reasons and expected duration of the ban were not initially known. However, there had previously been criticism officially involved in the blockade of Condolences for the killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
Instagram can only be accessed via VPN
The Instagram platform, which is also widely used in Turkey, was only accessible to users via protected network connections (VPN) in the morning. Cyber rights activist Yaman Akdeniz wrote on the platform X (formerly Twitter), the reason was “national security and the protection of public order”.
Communications director accused the platform of censorship
On Wednesday, Turkey’s communications director Fahrettin Altun had Instagram in a post on X of blocking expressions of condolence for Ismail Haniyeh. He accused the platform censorship.
It was not immediately clear whether there is a connection to the ban. Turkey has declared a day of national mourning for Friday because of Haniyeh’s death, as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on X announced.
