Inspiring High School Pushes Boundaries in the Education System

Twice a year, the organization “proEdu” organizes a half-day forum for the exchange of specialists at all levels of the education system. Educational institutions with particularly inspiring projects or models are invited as lecture guests: this year, for example, the high school in Gossau. With its new flexible timetable model and adapted teaching formats, it is taking on a pioneering role across cantons.

High school pushes boundaries in the school system
“With the new approach, we have ‘broken boundaries’. It enables us to accompany young people in their learning in a new quality,” says Thomas Eberle, headmaster of the Buechenwald upper school. The focus of the presentation at the proEdu Forum was to show those present how exactly the new, progressive teaching model was implemented in individual steps and with the involvement of teachers and other stakeholders (parents, young people, politicians, etc.). “We proceeded in a very targeted, patient and well-structured manner.”

School development requires communication and courage
However, successfully implementing a project like this requires, above all, courage and open communication internally and externally. The Gossau high school did this well, as she has since been invited to lectures more often as a guest speaker. This role is gladly taken on: the lectures are about learning from each other, exchanging ideas and growing together. “School development has a lot to do with courage, commitment and networking. It’s exactly these kinds of people who come together on such occasions, which is very inspiring and contagious,” explains Eberle.
