In the United States, the far-right conservative Brazilian ideologue Olavo de Carvalho has died. He was seen as the inspiration for Brazilian President Bolsonaro. The family made on his Twitter-account announced that Carvalho died in hospital. He was 74 years old.
The announcement does not say anything about the cause of death. But his daughter writes that Carvalho died as a result of a corona infection. He was hospitalized a few days ago. Carvalho himself was a corona skeptic.
conspiracy theories
He was seen as someone who had a lot of influence on the policies of Brazilian President Bolsonaro. Like the president, Carvalho has downplayed the impact of the coronavirus from the start of the pandemic.
He also supported conspiracy theories and claimed, among other things, that cola brewer Pepsi used the cells of aborted fetuses as a sweetener. He also denied climate change and, like Bolsonaro, disputed the usefulness of corona vaccinations.
Carvalho has lived in the United States since 2005, after the left won Brazil’s presidential election. There he gave online philosophy classes in which he spoke about individual rights and Christianity.
That ultimately made him a key figure in the conservative movement that brought Bolsonaro to power in 2018. In a message on Twitter Bolsonaro calls Carvalho one of the greatest thinkers in the history of the country.
“He was a great figure in the fight for freedom and a beacon for millions of Brazilians.” Bolsonaro has declared a day of national mourning.
Elections
The popularity of Bolsonaro is considerably decreased for his handling of the corona crisis and the rising inflation in the country. In October there are again presidential elections and it becomes clear whether Bolsonaro will get a new term.
