During his odyssey to save Peach, Mario travels to New Donk City, a city inspired by New York…
Travel around the globe
Peach is kidnapped by Bowser who wishes to forcefully marry her. Mario is the only hero who can save her. As with every game Marioits quality does not come from its scenario but from its gameplay and its realization.
Released at the start of the Nintendo Switch release, as Super Mario Galaxy or super mario 64, Super Mario Odyssey fully exploits the functionalities of the game console by offering an original concept.
During his odyssey, Mario meets Cappy, a top hat with amazing abilities. Equipped with a joy-con, the player can throw it (without letting go) so that Mario projects Cappy on an NPC. This simple action allows the plumber to take control of said NPC, granting him new abilities to facilitate his quest.
Direction New Donk City
Mario crosses many countries around the globe thanks to a vehicle called the Odyssey. Bowser decided to get married on the moon. Mario is then forced to collect Power Moons to power the Odyssey, allowing the ships to travel further.
During his trip, Mario will stop in a country with a very particular style: the country of Skyscrapers and its city, New Donk City.
After freeing the city from a Mechawiggler sent by Bowser, Mario (controlled by the player) discovers New Donk City, a city very much inspired by New York with its buildings and yellow taxis.
She is represented by Pauline, the mayor of the city, who exercises her work within the city hall, a building which is none other than the Empire State Building. A nice nod to King Kong, who was already the first inspiration for the character of Donkey Kong, enemy of the first eponymous game where Mario, formerly called Jumpman, had to save Pauline from the clutches of the gorilla. A real homecoming.
Ode to nostalgia
At first glance, New Donk City seems to be a completely opposite level of the Mario universe with its very realistic side and its “human” inhabitants. In reality, the city is a true love letter to this universe. It is full of references to the history of the plumber and his first rival Donkey Kong.
In addition to the 2D passages during the legendary festival where we face an 8-bit Donkey Kong sending barrels, the city is dotted with nods including red construction beams, street names like Dixie Street and Cranky Avenue or even the unlockable costume which is none other than Mario’s outfit in the series Mario Maker.
With this installment, Myamoto, the co-creator of Mario, said he wanted to return to the origins of the series in 3D by getting closer to the main target of the old games and moving away from the newer ones.
This is how the game offers a real nostalgic adventure for lovers of Nintendo’s mascot.
Super Mario Odyssey’s any% speedrun world record is 56 minutes and 55 seconds. It is owned by the Italian Tyron18.
Empire State Building
real star of the skyline New York, the Empire State Building has inspired many authors and appeared in many works.
One of his works stands out in particular and has left its mark on generations of cinephiles: it is of course the film King Kong (1933).
The mythical Art Deco building, inaugurated in 1931, is one of the most famous buildings in the world. Its name comes from “The Empire State”, the nickname of the state of New York.
After having been the tallest skyscraper in the world until 1967, it is today the third in New York (381 m and 443 m with its antenna), behind 432 Park Avenue (425 m) and One World Trade Center (541 m).
The lobby of the Empire State Building is like the building: huge! The equivalent of three storeys high, it is richly decorated in marble with an aluminum relief representing the silhouette of the monument. Its 86th-floor observatory offers a breathtaking view of the metropolis.
If you make the visit during the day, keep your ticket carefully, it will allow you to go back up there for free the same evening to admire the city in a different light.
Each evening, it lights up with different colors to celebrate a particular event.
