Inspirational Words and Music: Pray and Work – Church News

Editor’s Note: “Words of Inspiration” are shared by Lloyd Newell each Sunday during the weekly broadcast of the Tabernacle Choir on Temple Square. This was previously aired and will be broadcast again on Sunday, May 2, 2021.

During this past year, many of us have felt the need to seek divine help much more than before. When the world is in chaos, when normality in life is anything but normal, we understand that our strength and wisdom are not enough. When we are stunned by the dizzying way the world changes, it is natural that we look for something or Someone reliable and unchangeable. In other words, we have turned more to God. Many who, in the past, did not pray, have begun to pray, and those who already did, have noticed that their supplications have become more fervent and more sincere.

So feeling a bit overwhelmed, as has happened recently, may not be so bad. We don’t want to go through it again, but we are grateful for having a stronger connection with God, and for what we learned about the relationship between prayer and work.

Religious leader Russell Ballard referred to one of those lessons last October: “No matter where you live, what language you speak, or the challenges you face,” he said, “God hears you and answers you in His own way and in His own way. own time. Because we are His children, we can turn to Him for help, comfort, and a renewed desire to make a positive difference in the world. ” But later he reminded us of this: “Praying for justice, peace, the poor and the sick is often not enough. After kneel down to pray, we must get up and do the most possible for ourselves and for others ”. (See “Watch therefore, praying at all times”)

Consider, for example, vaccines that have been formulated so miraculously in a relatively short time. This miracle, like all the others, arises from a combination of millions of prayers and millions of hours of hard work. Prayer and work often go hand in hand. We trust that God will answer our pleas, as we do what more we can on our part. Prayer not only draws blessings from heaven, but encourages our best efforts. We will feel much more determined and inspired to produce powerful works after waking up after earnest prayer.

In tune …
