A report by the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ) paints a shocking picture about the state of affairs at care farm Aurora Borealis in Wedde (Groningen), where people with severe multiple disabilities live.

Clients were abused or punished both physically and mentally for doing something displeased by healthcare workers, according to a report published today rapport.

For example, a client’s head was smeared with peanut butter, after which a dog licked him off and a client was put in a ditch. Someone was also pushed with his head into the toilet and care providers threw sand into a client’s bed because he would not have weeded the garden properly.

Another client had a whole orange shoved into his mouth. Then he was pulled back by his hair. Yet another client was put outside behind the window because of making loud noises.

Residents of the care farm were belittled in other ways as well. They were laughed at, insulted and humiliated, the inspection writes.

The location was tested on eleven points, and failed on ten points. Moreover, the directors of the healthcare organization did not adopt an honest and transparent attitude during the investigation by the IGJ. The organization must cease all activities as soon as possible, but no later than February 9, from the inspection.

The case came to light in October last year when the police received several reports about the location. Investigative journalist Alberto Stegeman secretly made recordings on the farm and confronted the healthcare provider with the images.

Two clients were immediately transferred to another healthcare institution on the order of the IGJ. As a result of the imposed closure, the remaining clients must now also be accommodated elsewhere, insofar as this has not already happened, writes RTV North. A total of six people were arrested.
