Inspector General Report Reveals Serious Errors in Federal Penitentiary Center’s Handling of Jeffrey Epstein’s Suicide

In a report and a summary statement, the Inspector General of the Department of Justice points to “many and serious errors by the staff of the federal penitentiary center in New York”.

American financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison in New York in August 2019 before being brought to justice for sexual exploitation of minors, committed suicide following a succession of “negligence” by prison staff, concluded Tuesday the Ministry of Justice.

In a report and a summary press release, the ministry’s inspector general, Michael Horowitz, points to “many and serious errors by the staff of the federal penitentiary center in New York” where Jeffrey Epstein was detained, found hanging in his cell with a sheet tight around the neck on August 10, 2019 at dawn.

His ex-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell sentenced to 20 years in prison

Accusing in particular two guards of the American prison administration of “bad behavior and negligence”, Michael Horowitz underlines that Jeffrey Epstein, who was in principle “under control for suicidal risk” since the end of July 2019, had been placed “alone” and ” unsupervised” in a cell on August 9, 2019 and that he had been provided that evening with “an excessive amount of bed linen”.

The Epstein affair, named after this Wall Street financier accused of sex crimes and who died at the age of 66, has for years embarrassed some of the political and economic elites in the United States and abroad.

In New York, his ex-mistress and collaborator Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced in June 2022 to 20 years in prison, the British prince Andrew found in March of the same year a financial agreement with one of his accusers of rape.

Former French modeling agent Jean-Luc Brunel, charged with rape of minors, was found dead hanged in prison in Paris in February 2022.

A death that does not result “from a criminal act”

Finally, in addition to payments from JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank to close their files on their relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the names of former Presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton and Microsoft founder Bill Gates have been cited in the press as having known this man. , already sentenced in 2008 for forcing young girls into prostitution in Florida.

The influence of Jeffrey Epstein’s network in the United States and Europe fueled many conspiracy theories after his death about an assassination that was disguised as suicide. But New York forensic medicine and the federal police (FBI) had concluded that the man had killed himself and that this death “was not the result of a criminal act”.

The Inspector General of the Department of Justice has also “found no evidence that contradicts the conclusions of the FBI as to the absence of criminal acts in the death of Epstein”.
