Inspection: no evidence for dumping coal residues into the sea by Tata Steel | NOW

No evidence was found for the illegal discharge of coal residues into the sea by Tata Steel. The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) reports this in a research report on Wednesday.

The investigation was started by State Secretary Vivianne Heijnen (Infrastructure and Water Management), in response to reporting of the Noord-Hollands Dagblad in February. It stated that after unloading and loading, workers would illegally sweep coal and ore residues into the North Sea. There would also be drone images that demonstrate this.

During the investigation, the ILT viewed all previous inspections and the images of possible discharges. This shows that there is no evidence for the dumping of the remains into the sea.

The drone images do not show that residues are being discharged, a spokesperson for the inspection service says to NH News† “We do see that substances are swept to the side of the deck, but not that they end up in the water at the port of IJmuiden”.
