As we reported yesterday morning, Insomniac Games has become the victim of a hacker attack. The group behind the attack stole confidential data of studio employees and materials for the game Wolverine, and also demanded ransom money from the developers. Sony Interactive Entertainment, which is the publisher of the game, quickly responded to the leak and commented on the situation.
The hacker group Rhysida confirmed that it had the stolen data, publishing several screenshots from the game Wolverine and personal data of Insomniac Games employees as evidence. The thieves demanded 50 bitcoins, or about $2 million, for the return of all the data and gave the studio seven days to respond to the “offer.”
The VGC portal contacted Sony and asked for comment on the attack. Representatives from the game publisher released a brief statement:
We are aware of reports that Insomniac Games has been the victim of a cyber attack. We are currently investigating the situation. We have no reason to believe that other divisions of Sony Interactive Entertainment or Sony were affected.
Sony Corporation is often a target for attacks by hacker groups. Thus, in October it became known that hackers stole the data of about 6,800 employees of a Japanese company. It can be assumed that, as with previous leaks, Sony does not intend to pay for the stolen data. This means that it is quite possible that we will soon be able to see previously unpublished footage from the game.
