Re: The insinuations in a number of national media regarding the Peace and Sovereignty Movement regarding the May 21, 2023 march and rally.

Dear Mrs. Momchilova,

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

On May 21, 2023, in the city of Sofia, the civil Movement for “Peace and Sovereignty” held in 42 cities in the country and several cities abroad the sixth March/procession/ rally for peace and sovereignty. In this regard, we can provide copies of the following documentation – Concurrence letter from the Metropolitan Municipality, as well as the Minutes of a working meeting with representatives of SDVR prepared on the basis of this letter. The route of the March/procession/ is precisely indicated in this protocol. In this route, it was not planned to pass along “G.S. Rakovski” street, nor to hold a rally in front of the building of the Representation of the EU and EP in Bulgaria.

In the meantime, we found out through the Internet that PP “Vazrazhdane” announces on the same day and time/21.05.2023/, and in the same place – the pylons in front of the National Palace of Culture and Science rally and procession.

When the participants of the rally gathered on that day and time, a group appeared with the flags of PP “Vazrazhdane”, which stood on the side of the pylons at the National Palace of Culture. At the very beginning of the rally, I personally announced the following:

• The “Peace and Sovereignty” movement is a civil event initiated by civil organizations and individuals. It welcomes the support of different parties, but their participation in our events should be as citizens, not as parties to parcel out a nationwide citizens’ initiative. Only Bulgarian flags can be raised – the national flag, that of the April Uprising and the Samara flag, under which the Bulgarian militia fought for the freedom and independence of our Motherland. Party flags and those of other countries are not acceptable;

• The goal of the “Peace and Sovereignty” Movement is the holding of a national referendum. The main issue of the referendum proposed by us is for the Bulgarian people, as sovereign, to say by voting whether Bulgaria should participate in one or another military conflict. Such a fateful issue should not be decided by a narrow group – government and parliament. Because, as our history testifies, such decisions by narrow groups of individuals have led our Motherland to national catastrophes;

• Our rallies should not be in front of foreign embassies and missions, but only in front of Bulgarian institutions, which should be responsible only to Bulgarian citizens.

As proof of the above, we can provide you with a recorded clip of the speech.

It is necessary to note that during the multi-thousand procession, about 200-300 supporters of the “Vazrazhdane” PP together with their flags separated from the main group of participants at the intersection of Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd. and G.S. Rakovski” and went the same way.

Later, we learned from the mass media that the building of the EU and EP Representation in Bulgaria, located on the upper street, was targeted with red paint. We don’t know who did it or why, and it’s not our job to find out.

The problem lies in the fact that a number of mainstream media such as BTV and Nova TV presented relatively credible information in their evening broadcasts. But the next day in the morning, in their newscasts, they blamed the vandalism on the Movement for Peace and Sovereignty. And in their afternoon journalistic broadcasts, they already suggested that the March for Peace was organized by PP Vazrazhdane. For example, in their broadcast on the morning of May 22 in the interval 7:30-7:40, they blamed the “Peace and Sovereignty” Movement for this vandalism, which has nothing to do with the truth. Such defamation and manipulation of public opinion is not acceptable from a moral and ethical point of view and contradicts the basic principles of journalistic ethics. Because it presents our peaceful movement, adhering to the principles of non-violence and tolerance and composed of worthy Bulgarian citizens of different ages, as a riotous hooligan crowd. Also, party affiliation to a certain political formation is “sewn” onto a purely civil initiative. For your information, representatives of 6 more political formations participated in the rally as citizens, who did not participate in the vandalism regarding the building of the EU and EP Representation in Sofia.

Dear Mrs. Momchilova,

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, Heads of the mentioned media,

We believe that the information presented by us should be investigated. As well as taking adequate measures to remove the distortion of information and slander about the Movement for “Peace and Sovereignty”. We believe that the managements of the mentioned media should grant us the right of reply, as well as publicly apologize for their insinuations.

05/22/2023 Sincerely: /p/ is unreadable
