Open Monument Day: German contribution to the “European Heritage Days”

The day of the open monument takes place nationwide since 1993 on the second Sunday in September, on September 12th for the 29th time.

It is coordinated nationwide by the German Foundation for Monument Protection.

Many private monument owners and associations are involved.

The day is the German contribution to the European Heritage Days under the auspices of the Council of Europe. 50 European countries take part.

The basic idea of the Open Monument Day is to open historic buildings and places to visitors once a year that are otherwise inaccessible or only partially accessible.

The opening is usually free of charge. In many places, special tours, demonstrations and colorful supporting programs await visitors.

In eight municipalities in the Würzburg district, eleven historical buildings and sites open their gates that are otherwise rarely or not at all accessible to citizens.

This year the motto of the day is “To be and appear – in history, architecture and preservation of monuments”. pm
