Insight into the future of Latvian cinema: 16 films for the production of which NKC funding has been granted

In mid-June, the domestic film production competition announced by the National Film Center (NCC) ended, in which 16 film projects were supported – five feature films, seven documentaries and four animated films.

As the NKC representative Kristīne Matīsa informed the portal “Delfi”, a total of almost two million euros (exactly 1,982,472 euros) has been allocated for the upcoming films. Among the upcoming films are Dzintars Dreibergs ‘ideological continuation of “Soul Blows” about the difficult situation in Latvia in the Second World War, the screening of the domestic literary phenomenon promised by Juris Poškus – Andris Kalnozols’ novel “Calendar Calls Me”, and documentaries that will study Soviet dissidents. The fate of Ukrainian refugees, everyday public transport destinations in Riga and various bright personalities.

According to Matīsa, directors Alise Zariņa, Viesturs Kairišs, Dzintars Dreibergs, Pāvels Gumennikovs and Juris Poškus will start making new feature films this year, documentaries will be made by Laila Pakalniņa, Kristīne Želve, Agnese and Marina Nazarenko, while Edmunds Jansons, Dace Rīdūze, Krista Burāne and Kārlis Vītols will work in the animation.
