The release of Alan Wake 2 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S is fast approaching, and ahead of launch, Remedy PR director Thomas Puha spoke with IGN about what to expect from the game’s 60fps performance mode, as well as restrictions imposed specifically by the Series S.
Regarding the Series S, Puha explained that there are two main problems that developers face with the console: a smaller GPU and memory compared to the Xbox Series X.
“In Series S, the processor is almost the same as in Series X, there is not much difference. But the problem is with the GPU. And then, lack of memory is a pretty big problem. They tell us, “hey, you make computer games, you know how to optimize them?” Well, memory on a PC is not a problem”
Puha went on to point out that optimizing Alan Wake 2 for PC is much easier (in part because the team has a lot of experience with it), but Remedy has nonetheless gone to great lengths to ensure that Alan Wake 2 will run well on the Xbox Series S:
“Obviously there is a huge difference in power [между Xbox Series X и Series S]so optimizing on PC is much easier because of the memory – and it’s not like there’s one super PC and one weaker PC, there are about 300 PC configurations and believe me, it’s a huge problem, but we’ve released a lot of games on PC , so we’re doing a little better with that.”
“We’ve worked really hard to get the Series S to run at a solid 30fps and try to maintain good visual quality, but if you want to see the game at its best in full next-gen form, it’s best to do so on the device. which has the hardware to do this.”
