A crossover between horror sagas Insidious et Sinister ? An idea that producer Jason Blum seriously considered.
And Insidious et Sinister are quite similar, that’s because they were both produced by Jason Blum, through his company Blumhouse. It was he who truly reinvigorated American horror cinema in the 2010s, thanks to low-budget productions, (usually) not exceeding $5 million.
So, Insidious raised 100 million for a budget of 1.5 million, and Sinister more than 87 million for a budget of 3 million. Logically, these successes therefore gave rise to franchises: Sinister was entitled to a second opus, and four sequels followed Insidious. While the final chapter of the saga, titled The Red Door, has just been revealed in a new trailer, the CinePOP site asked Jason Blum if the rumors of a crossover between the two sagas were indeed true.
CROSSOVER OR GAME OVER?
In the interview he gave to the Spanish site, the producer therefore returned to this project, which seems – for the moment at least – at a standstill:
« I think it would be fun, but we have to find the right story. We worked on it for a while, but we never managed to find a strong concept. And I didn’t want to make a movie just to combine the two frankhises, jI wanted to make a really good movie. We haven’t had a great idea yet, but it’s a project that interests me. »
Monsters Assemble
It’s an idea that isn’t so crazy, because it would fit into a horror movie tradition. Indeed, long before the MCU superheroes appropriated the concept, it was Universal’s monsters who introduced it to the cinema, in Frankenstein meets the Werewolf then in The House of Frankenstein. More recently, we have also witnessed duels at the top such as Freddy versus Jason or Alien vs. Predator.
Thus, Bagul, the pagan soul-eating god, could retroactively become a spirit from the evil dimension ofInsidious« The Further “. After all, Bagul and the primary antagonist haunting the Lamberts, the Red-Faced Demon, have in common a particular interest in child possession. But since the very negative critical reception of Sinister 2, there have been no plans for a third installment. Whether Insidious : The Red Doorin theaters July 5, 2023is a big hit, maybe Jason Blum will consider this crossover concept more seriously.
