At the beginning of the week we informed you that the well-known and proven insider Tom Henderson he knows more about Sony’s plans for new gaming hardware. Henderson has repeatedly talked about a new revision of the PlayStation 5 being on the way, but during his stream over the weekend he said there is one more device in the works that he will be able to say more about soon. Speculations immediately began that this could be a new gaming handheld, although Henderson did not hint at any details and we would be very surprised indeed if this were to happen. A few days later, however, Henderson breaks through the wall of silence and unveils the Q Lite, which is actually supposed to be—surprise the world—Sony’s new gaming handheld.
“After days of speculation, Insider Gaming brings you news of the development of a new portable PlayStation,” Henderson says in his exclusive article, citing anonymous sources familiar with the situation at Sony. Although these are of course anecdotal reports, Tom Henderson’s history of leaks and other details he brings to the account of the mentioned device with the working designation Q Lite seem credible and are certainly food for thought. Importantly, according to the insider, the device will be focused exclusively on streaming gaming, but not from the cloud, but through the Remote Play platform. It is a technology that players already know and use well, but their own device could bring comfort in the form of its own physical buttons, instead of having to connect the controller to, for example, a mobile phone.
In terms of specs, Henderson says the device should be capable of 1080p at 60 fps and by its very nature will require a constant internet or home network connection. According to Henderson, it should look like its appearance like a DualSense controller, with a large 8-inch touch LCD. Just for context, the PS Vita offered a 5-inch display, and the Steam Deck, for example, offers a 7-inch display. So we are really talking about a generous surface and the possibility to really enjoy the game. You will probably not be surprised that the device should support adaptive triggers and haptic response, and should offer physical buttons for sound control, its own speaker and a port for connecting headphones. “Insider Gaming has learned that the Q Lite is in the testing phase and should arrive before the release of the PS5 Pro and after the release of the revision with a removable drive,” adds the insider.
Along with these devices, according to Henderson, Sony is also preparing a pair of new wireless headphones – the ones with the working designation Nomad and the large headphones currently known as the Voyager project. It is the Q Lite handheld and the new revisions of the console that are to be part of the so-called the second phase of the PlayStation 5 lifecycle, which should begin to launch in the coming months. Henderson says he’s expecting the PS5 Pro around Christmas next year, which would mean we’ll have everything else by then.
