Prabal gurung his love letter to new york fall / winter 2021/22 collection interview with prabal gurung: hello everyone, i’m prabal gurung, live from my studio in new york, it’s snowing a little outside, but we’re good at warm and surrounded by colors inside. this is the new normal for all of us and I am delighted that we can at least be in touch. i live right next to washington square park, where all of the latest protests have taken place, and i decided to stay in new york, because i knew history was being made. I knew that individually we can have our own conversations, but collectively we can make a revolution. and I realized that I wanted to be a part of it. new york is my valentine’s day, the city I love the most because it is not only its architecture and its history, but it is also thanks to the people who live here, the dreamers, the marginalized, the artists, the creatives. because in the end what makes New York vibrate, what gives it its heart and soul, are the artists and the creatives. living in New York for 20 years, black and white have become the ‘uniform. but my roots are from nepal and india, and there pink and red signify a revival, a color that bodes well for a new start and i wanted to add those bright colors. these colors also tell a story about the person wearing it; is it a girl or a boy? what a thrilling period, when color and inanimate objects like clothes no longer confront a gender norm. and that’s what I wanted to celebrate and in addition, as a print of the season, I chose flowers, pink bodégas. it’s a couture approach and know-how but this time, I wanted the cocktail dresses or blouses sculpted normally in satin, to be made in what we consider to be modest fabrics that is- ie cotton or jersey. so it looks dressy, but when you touch, it’s actually cotton. then there is a level of familiarity, comfort and ease. With all my heart, I hope this collection brings joy, and makes you feel what I felt this summer: hope, optimism and happiness. hope to see you soon in person. take care of yourself. music from the film by prabal gurung (only to be used in the context of paris fashion week, under cover of the right to information)
