Inside Zhili: The Intense Reality of China’s Sweatshop Capital Captured in an Immersive Documentary

‘Giant, immersive documentary about the sweatshop capital of China.’

To be seen once in the context of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam: the documentary Youth van IDFA’s ‘Guest of Honor’ Wang Bing, one of our greatest contemporary filmmakers. He follows the intimidating daily labor of young textile workers in Zhili and captures the invisible reality of China’s extraordinary local economy.

Please note: this documentary has English subtitles.

The City of Zhili, located on the Yangtze River approximately 150 km from Shanghai, is the center of Chinese textile production. Here, young workers from all rural areas gather to work in the textile industry. They are in their early twenties, share dormitories and eat their meals together in the hallway. They work tirelessly so that one day they can raise a child, buy a house or start their own workshop. Friendships are made, love relationships arise and they share joys and sorrows with each other. Bing lovingly follows the young people with his observational camera and paints a realistic picture of life in Chinese sweatshops.
