Walking on your toes
Because Erica had come across as harsh and bossy in the previous TV series Ik Vertrek and had been called a sour lesbian on social media, she decided to behave differently. Caroline in her book about Erica: ‘I couldn’t help but smile inwardly when I saw that this time she played the role of a woman oblivious to the impact of recording. She was careful not to react angrily or shout. But she walked on her toes all day long. It didn’t surprise me that after a day of filming she went to bed completely exhausted around eight o’clock in the evening.’
‘Spontaneous conversations’
According to Caroline, everything that seems spontaneous in the well-known reality soap is not in reality. ‘Sometimes something had to be repeated four times. If Martien didn’t scream loud enough or Erica, Maxime or I said something wrong, it was: Again. Even the ‘spontaneous conversations’ were staged, just like the ‘spontaneous’ events that we had to film ourselves when the crew was in the Netherlands.’ According to Caroline, that was what the director had to do, who, according to her, was only interested in drama, intrigue, arguments and sensation. ‘He said: The viewers don’t want boring characters, they want to be entertained and you have to provide that.’
